It will come in handy if you can turn off some notifications, like articles of the Quibbler because you don't want to read them. It will be nice if you can choose which thing you follow or not, because if you have been offline for a while you will have 50 notifications. Which is too much.
My answer to this:
They are reviewing a mark all button for the notifications so you can mark them all at once. And you can unfollow topics, so it wil be only for articles. So it is rather not useful to have this option.
